The Enforcement Directorate (ED) carried out a series of searches across Kerala on Wednesday as part of an ongoing money laundering investigation linked to former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his family. The operation covered multiple locations, including properties associated with the veteran CPI(M) leader in Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur, marking a significant development in a case that has attracted considerable political attention in the state.
According to officials, the searches were conducted under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Investigation teams reportedly examined financial records, electronic devices, and documents that could provide insight into transactions under scrutiny. The probe is focused on alleged financial dealings involving Exalogic Solutions, a company linked to Vijayan’s daughter, T. Veena, and Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited (CMRL), a private company based in Kerala.
The controversy revolves around allegations that CMRL transferred approximately ₹1.72 crore to Exalogic Solutions between 2018 and 2019. Investigators are examining claims that these payments were made without the company receiving corresponding services in return. Authorities are attempting to determine whether the transactions were legitimate business arrangements or part of a broader financial irregularity.
The issue first gained attention following an Income Tax Department investigation that reportedly uncovered significant discrepancies in company records and expenditure claims. Subsequent inquiries raised questions regarding financial transactions and accounting practices involving multiple entities. Based on these findings, the Enforcement Directorate registered a money laundering case in 2024 and began a detailed investigation into the matter.
As part of the latest action, ED officials reportedly questioned T. Veena and conducted searches at premises connected to individuals associated with the case. Sources indicate that investigators are analyzing transaction trails, company records, funding sources, and corporate structures linked to both Exalogic Solutions and CMRL. Authorities are also examining whether funds were diverted through complex financial arrangements.
The case is not limited to the ED investigation alone. The Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) is also probing the alleged irregularities. Reports suggest that the agency has named certain individuals connected to the companies involved as part of its inquiry. Investigators are seeking to establish whether financial statements were manipulated and whether funds were transferred improperly through corporate channels.
The latest developments come shortly after the Kerala High Court dismissed a petition filed by CMRL seeking to halt the Enforcement Directorate’s proceedings. The court’s decision cleared the way for the agency to continue its investigation without legal obstacles, leading to the searches conducted across the state.
The case has become one of the most debated political controversies in Kerala in recent years. Political opponents have repeatedly demanded accountability and transparency regarding the allegations, while leaders from the Left camp have maintained that the investigation should be allowed to proceed through legal channels without political interference.
Adding to the political significance of the issue is the changing landscape in Kerala politics. Following the recent Assembly elections, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) suffered a major setback, while the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) secured a decisive victory and formed the government. Pinarayi Vijayan, who served as Kerala’s Chief Minister for two consecutive terms, has since emerged as a prominent opposition voice in the state.
As investigators continue to examine financial records and transaction histories, the outcome of the case could have important legal and political implications. For now, authorities have emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing, and conclusions will be drawn only after all evidence has been thoroughly reviewed.
