The Union government has laid the foundation stone for a four-lane road overbridge between Guntur and Nambur railway stations in Andhra Pradesh. The Ministry of Railways estimates the project at ₹108 crore and says it will replace level crossing Gate No. 3 on the Guntur-Krishna Canal section of the line. The event took place on September 26.
Project details
The proposed bridge is 668 metres long and is designed to connect Bus Stand Road directly with Gorantla village near Guntur’s Inner Ring Road. The ministry says the project needs 2.9 acres of land and that Railways will bear the entire estimated cost. Construction is scheduled to begin shortly, according to the release; the ministry did not provide a firm completion date in the announcement.
Union Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti V. Somanna and Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar attended the foundation ceremony. Local public representatives and railway officials were also present. The release describes benefits expected from removing the level crossing, including fewer road delays and improved rail and road movement.
What residents can expect
A road overbridge can allow road traffic to cross railway tracks without waiting at a gate, but the predicted travel-time and fuel savings remain projections until the structure is finished and in use. Construction itself can affect local traffic. Residents should rely on later railway and local-authority notices for work phases, diversions, land procedures and an opening schedule.
The government’s estimated ₹108 crore cost is a sanctioned project figure, not evidence that this amount has already been spent. The land requirement likewise describes the planned footprint rather than completed acquisition. These distinctions matter when assessing the project’s progress and public spending.
Next milestones
The next practical steps are commencement of construction, site and land arrangements, and subsequent engineering and safety approvals before opening. The ministry also referred to broader station modernisation in Andhra Pradesh, but that separate programme should not be confused with this bridge’s budget or timetable. The current announcement concerns the foundation stone and stated plan.
