Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has expressed his views on the ongoing debate surrounding the expansion of Lok Sabha seats, stating that while there is broad support for women’s reservation, differences remain regarding the increase in parliamentary seats.
Taking to social media, Revanth Reddy emphasized that the issue of Lok Sabha seat expansion should not be rushed into a decision. Instead, he suggested that an all-party meeting should be convened to discuss the matter thoroughly and arrive at a consensus. According to him, such a significant decision must involve the opinions of all political stakeholders in a democratic manner.
He clarified that women’s reservation and the expansion of Lok Sabha seats are two distinct issues and should not be linked together. While there is near-unanimous support across the country for implementing reservations for women in legislative bodies, the proposal to increase seats based on population has raised concerns among several leaders.
Revanth Reddy warned that increasing Lok Sabha seats purely on the basis of population could disadvantage southern and smaller states. He argued that such a move might create regional imbalances and could have long-term implications for the country’s unity and political stability.
He further stressed that implementing women’s reservation at the Assembly level would be widely accepted and beneficial. However, using it as a basis to justify changes in parliamentary representation could lead to unnecessary complications.
The Chief Minister also highlighted that national interest should remain the top priority for all political parties. Decisions of this scale, he said, must be taken carefully, keeping in mind fairness, equality, and the overall development of the country.
