Rahul Gandhi criticizes BJP over alleged vote theft, emphasizing concerns about election integrity.
A major political controversy has erupted after Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi made sharp remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) during a public meeting in Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli. His comments triggered an immediate backlash from BJP leaders, who accused him of using “anti-national” language and insulting democratic institutions.
While addressing Congress workers, Rahul Gandhi urged party supporters to directly confront RSS workers and call Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, and the RSS “traitors.” He alleged that the BJP and RSS were working against India’s Constitution and the ideals of leaders like Dr BR Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi.
The Congress MP claimed that the ruling party had weakened democratic institutions and accused them of attempting to divide the country politically and socially. His speech quickly went viral on social media, drawing strong reactions from both supporters and critics.
Soon after the speech, Rahul Gandhi also took a swipe at Prime Minister Modi over a viral moment from Italy involving Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Referring to a video in which PM Modi gifted a pack of Melody candies to Meloni — a playful nod to the internet trend “Melodi” — Rahul Gandhi criticised the Prime Minister for focusing on symbolic gestures while ordinary citizens were struggling with economic issues.
In a social media post, Gandhi said that farmers, youth, labourers, women, and small traders across the country were facing serious hardships, while the Prime Minister was busy making “reels” and participating in light-hearted moments abroad. He described the situation as a “farce” rather than leadership.
The BJP reacted strongly to both the speech and the social media remarks. Senior BJP leaders accused Rahul Gandhi of crossing political limits and using language similar to India’s enemies. Union Minister Giriraj Singh alleged that Gandhi’s statements resembled the rhetoric used by hostile nations against India.
BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari also attacked the Congress leader, claiming that calling the Prime Minister and Home Minister “traitors” was an insult not just to political leaders but to the democratic mandate of 140 crore Indians. He further alleged that Rahul Gandhi’s statements mirrored narratives promoted by Pakistan and anti-India groups.
Former Union Minister and BJP MP Anurag Thakur accused the Congress party of trying to weaken the Constitution while ironically accusing others of doing so. He referred to the Emergency imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975 and claimed that the Congress had a history of undermining democratic values.
Thakur also defended the RSS, saying the organisation had played a major role during difficult periods in India’s history, including wars and emergencies. According to him, repeatedly attacking PM Modi and the RSS had become a regular political strategy for the Congress.
The controversy has once again highlighted the deepening political divide between the BJP and Congress ahead of upcoming elections. Rahul Gandhi’s remarks have intensified debates over political language, criticism of the government, and the boundaries of opposition politics in India.
Supporters of Rahul Gandhi argue that he is raising legitimate concerns about democracy and governance, while BJP leaders insist that such remarks damage the dignity of constitutional offices and national unity.
As political tensions continue to rise, the issue is expected to dominate headlines and spark further confrontations between the country’s two largest political parties in the coming days.
