Legislative assembly floor test shows Vijay’s strong backing, AIADMK rebels create political upheaval.
Tamil Nadu politics witnessed a historic and dramatic moment after actor-turned-politician Vijay successfully won the trust vote in the state assembly with the support of 144 MLAs. The floor test not only confirmed Vijay as the Chief Minister but also exposed deep cracks inside the AIADMK, one of Tamil Nadu’s biggest political parties.
Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), emerged as the single largest party in the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. However, the party fell short of the majority mark and needed additional support to prove its strength in the assembly. After days of intense political discussions and negotiations, Vijay managed to gather the required numbers and comfortably crossed the majority line during the trust vote.
During the voting process, 144 MLAs voted in favor of Vijay’s government, while only 22 legislators opposed him. A few members remained neutral during the proceedings. The biggest surprise came from the AIADMK camp, where 24 MLAs openly defied party chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami and voted in support of Vijay. Their move has created a major political storm and raised serious questions about the future unity of the AIADMK.
Political experts believe this rebellion inside the AIADMK reflects growing dissatisfaction among party leaders after consecutive election defeats. Several senior leaders reportedly felt that the party needed a fresh political direction and believed supporting Vijay would help them remain politically relevant in the changing Tamil Nadu landscape.
The trust vote also highlighted Vijay’s rapid transformation from cinema superstar to a serious political force. His party’s performance in the elections shocked many analysts because Tamil Nadu politics had long been dominated by the DMK and AIADMK. Vijay’s rise has now broken that decades-old political pattern and introduced a new power center in the state.
Speaking after the victory, Vijay thanked the MLAs who supported him and said his government would focus on protecting people’s rights, improving welfare programs, and ensuring transparent governance. He also described the victory as a “people’s mandate for change” and promised to work for all communities without discrimination.
Meanwhile, the rebellion inside the AIADMK has intensified internal tensions. Reports suggest that some leaders may face disciplinary action for going against the party’s official stand. However, rebel MLAs argued that their decision was taken in the interest of Tamil Nadu’s political stability.
With this floor test victory, Vijay has now officially strengthened his position as Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister. At the same time, the political crisis within the AIADMK could reshape the state’s opposition politics in the coming months. Many political observers believe this marks the beginning of a new era in Tamil Nadu politics, with Vijay emerging as a powerful challenger to the traditional Dravidian parties.
