A major political storm has erupted in Tamil Nadu after AIADMK chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami, popularly known as EPS, removed several senior party leaders from their organisational posts following a dramatic floor test in the Assembly. The action came after a group of AIADMK MLAs voted in support of Chief Minister Vijay and his government during the confidence motion.
The political crisis intensified after 24 AIADMK MLAs allegedly defied the party whip and voted in favour of the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government. The AIADMK leadership termed the move a clear violation of party discipline and immediately initiated action against the rebel lawmakers and senior leaders associated with them.
During a press conference in Chennai, senior AIADMK leaders confirmed that the party had filed a petition seeking the disqualification of the rebel MLAs under the anti-defection law. Party leaders stated that all legislators had been instructed through an official whip to vote against the government during the floor test. However, several MLAs ignored the directive and supported Vijay’s administration instead.
The confidence vote turned out to be a significant victory for Vijay’s government. The ruling side secured support from 144 legislators, while only 22 MLAs voted against the motion. Several members abstained, and the DMK lawmakers walked out during the proceedings. The support extended by rebel AIADMK MLAs played a key role in strengthening Vijay’s position in the Assembly.
Following the rebellion, the AIADMK leadership announced disciplinary action against prominent party figures including C. V. Shanmugam, SP Velumani, and C Vijayabaskar. They were removed from important organisational responsibilities as the party attempted to send a strong message against indiscipline. Party leaders also warned that the rebel MLAs could lose their Assembly membership if the anti-defection law is enforced.
However, the rebel faction strongly defended its stand and questioned the legality of the whip itself. According to the dissenting MLAs, the party leadership did not follow proper procedure while appointing the whip for the Assembly session. Rebel leader CV Shanmugam argued that newly elected legislators should have been consulted before appointing the whip and electing legislative party leaders.
The controversy has now shifted toward the Speaker’s office. Both factions within the AIADMK have reportedly approached the Speaker, each claiming legitimacy over the legislative party structure. Legal experts believe the matter could soon move to court, especially given earlier Supreme Court rulings related to political splits and whip appointments in Maharashtra.
Political observers say the latest developments could trigger a major split within the AIADMK. The rebellion has exposed deep internal divisions in the party at a time when Tamil Nadu politics is witnessing rapid changes following Vijay’s political rise. Analysts believe the crisis may reshape opposition politics in the state over the coming months.
Meanwhile, EPS has maintained that strict disciplinary measures are necessary to protect the party’s unity and credibility. The coming days are expected to be crucial as the Speaker reviews the disqualification petitions and both sides prepare for a prolonged legal and political battle.
