A major political controversy has erupted in West Bengal after the BJP released a list of 43 properties allegedly linked to Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee. The development has intensified the ongoing political battle between the BJP and the ruling TMC ahead of upcoming elections and amid growing allegations of corruption and irregularities in the state.
According to BJP leaders, the properties are located across several prime areas in Kolkata and are either directly owned by Abhishek Banerjee or jointly held with family members and close associates. The list, reportedly sourced from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) database, has now become the center of a heated political debate.
One of the names in the list that attracted immediate attention was “Sayani Ghosh,” linked to a jointly owned property located at Seven Tanks Lane in Kolkata. Social media users quickly speculated whether the name referred to TMC MP Saayoni Ghosh. However, the actress-turned-politician strongly denied any connection to the property and warned of legal action against those spreading false information.
In a sharp response posted online, Saayoni Ghosh stated that she comes from a humble background and has never made “windfall profits” from politics. She accused critics of attempting to defame her without evidence and made it clear that she would not remain silent against fake propaganda.
The BJP, meanwhile, has intensified its attack on the TMC leadership. Sources close to the party claimed that a detailed investigation would be conducted into the ownership of the listed properties, the source of funds used for their purchase, and whether any financial irregularities were involved. BJP leaders alleged that the issue points toward large-scale corruption during the Mamata Banerjee government’s tenure.
The controversy comes shortly after the Kolkata Municipal Corporation issued notices to 17 properties allegedly associated with Abhishek Banerjee over unauthorised construction concerns. Among them was “Shantiniketan,” the residence of the Diamond Harbour MP. The civic body reportedly sought documents related to building approvals and warned that illegal structures could face demolition if violations were found.
West Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari further escalated the matter by alleging that several properties were registered under the name of a company called “Leaps and Bounds,” which he claimed was linked to Abhishek Banerjee and his family. According to Adhikari, multiple properties were also registered in the names of Banerjee’s father and other relatives.
Abhishek Banerjee responded strongly to the allegations and accused the BJP of political vendetta. During a press conference, he declared that he would not be intimidated even if authorities demolished his house or sent repeated notices. He maintained that his political fight against the BJP would continue regardless of pressure tactics.
The TMC dismissed the BJP’s claims as fabricated and politically motivated. Party leaders argued that the list was based merely on name searches and did not prove ownership. Former TMC MP Saket Gokhale called the document a “complete hoax,” questioning whether there could only be one person named Abhishek Banerjee in Kolkata.
The ruling party also criticised sections of the media for circulating what it called unverified information without proper fact-checking. TMC leaders warned that legal action could be taken against those promoting misleading reports and fake narratives.
As the political war intensifies, the controversy has become a major talking point in West Bengal politics. With investigations likely to continue and both parties refusing to back down, the issue is expected to dominate political discussions in the coming weeks.
