The Kerala government has officially finalized the allocation of portfolios among ministers following the formation of the new cabinet led by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan. The portfolio recommendations submitted by the Chief Minister were approved by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, paving the way for the newly sworn-in ministers to begin their responsibilities.
According to the official announcement, Chief Minister Satheesan has retained control of several key departments, including Finance, Law, General Administration, and Ports. In total, he will oversee around 35 departments, making him the central figure in the administration’s policy-making and governance framework.
The portfolio distribution reflects the government’s strategy of assigning major responsibilities to experienced leaders while ensuring representation for coalition partners. Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala has been entrusted with the crucial Home Department. Along with Home Affairs, he will also oversee Vigilance and several other important administrative portfolios, placing him in charge of maintaining law and order and monitoring anti-corruption initiatives across the state.
One of the most notable allocations is to Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) veteran P.K. Kunhalikutty. He has been assigned a wide range of departments that are expected to play a key role in Kerala’s economic development. His responsibilities include Industries and Commerce, Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Startups, Mining and Geology, as well as Handlooms and Textiles. Political observers believe these portfolios position him at the center of the state’s efforts to attract investment, promote innovation, and create employment opportunities.
Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph has been given charge of Electricity, Environment, and Parliamentary Affairs. These departments are expected to be crucial as the government focuses on sustainable development, energy reforms, and legislative coordination.
Senior Congress leader K. Muraleedharan has been assigned seven departments, including Health, Medical Education, Food Safety, and Devaswoms. His portfolio is considered one of the most significant in the cabinet because it directly impacts public health services, hospitals, medical institutions, and religious administration across the state.
Several other ministers have also been entrusted with important responsibilities. Roji M. John will oversee Higher Education, a department critical to Kerala’s strong academic and educational reputation. A.P. Anil Kumar has been given charge of Land and Revenue, while N. Shamsudheen will serve as the General Education Minister.
Coalition partners have also received significant portfolios. Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) leader Shibu Baby John will head the Forests and Wildlife Protection Department along with Skill Development. These departments are expected to play a major role in environmental conservation and employment generation initiatives.
Meanwhile, Kerala Congress (Joseph) leader Mon Joseph has been entrusted with Irrigation, Ground Water, Water Supply and Sanitation, and Housing. These sectors are particularly important for infrastructure development and improving the quality of life in both urban and rural areas.
The allocation of portfolios marks the completion of the cabinet formation process after the swearing-in ceremony held on May 18. Political analysts believe the distribution reflects a balance between administrative experience, coalition management, and governance priorities.
As the new government settles into office, attention will now shift to policy implementation, economic development, infrastructure projects, education reforms, healthcare improvements, and job creation. The coming months are expected to reveal how effectively the new cabinet works together to deliver on its promises and address the challenges facing Kerala.
