West Bengal politics is witnessing a historic shift after the Bharatiya Janata Party’s massive victory in the recent Assembly elections. Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has emerged as the strongest contender for the post of Chief Minister following the party’s landmark win over Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress.
Political insiders suggest that the BJP leadership has almost finalized Adhikari’s name for the top post. A formal announcement is expected soon after the BJP legislative party meeting in Kolkata, where newly elected MLAs are set to choose their leader. According to sources, West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya is likely to officially propose Suvendu Adhikari’s name during the meeting.
The BJP’s victory in West Bengal is being described as one of the party’s biggest political breakthroughs in eastern India. Suvendu Adhikari played a crucial role in the campaign and is widely credited for helping the BJP secure a decisive mandate in the state. Once considered a close aide and political protégé of Mamata Banerjee, Adhikari’s rise within the BJP has dramatically reshaped Bengal’s political landscape.
As discussions around government formation intensify, reports indicate that the new BJP government may appoint two Deputy Chief Ministers to support Adhikari. If implemented, it would mark the return of the deputy chief minister post in West Bengal after nearly two decades. The last prominent leader to hold the position was late CPM veteran Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee during the Jyoti Basu era.
Sources within the BJP suggest that one of the deputy chief minister positions may go to a woman leader. BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul is reportedly emerging as a strong candidate for the role after her recent electoral victory from Asansol Dakshin. If appointed, she could become the first woman Deputy Chief Minister in the history of West Bengal.
The second deputy chief minister position is expected to be given to a leader from North Bengal, a region considered politically important for the BJP. Speculation is growing around Shankar Ghosh, who recently won from Siliguri and is believed to be one of the leading contenders for the post.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah reportedly held separate meetings with both Agnimitra Paul and Shankar Ghosh during his recent visit to Kolkata. According to party insiders, the discussions focused on the possible leadership structure of the new government and future responsibilities.
The BJP is now preparing for a grand swearing-in ceremony scheduled to take place at the historic Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata. The event is expected to showcase the party’s growing influence in Bengal after years of political struggle in the state. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with several NDA chief ministers and senior BJP leaders, is likely to attend the ceremony.
Political analysts believe the BJP government will face major challenges after coming to power in Bengal. From maintaining law and order to fulfilling election promises and strengthening its organization in the state, the new administration will have significant expectations to meet.
For now, all attention remains on Suvendu Adhikari and the final shape of the BJP cabinet as Bengal prepares to witness a new political chapter.
